Description: You might recognize the name Adbusters and be surprised to learn it started in Vancouver. While it is now an international organization, it is such a passionate niche to work for that it’s included as a BC magazine for those interested in political writing.

BC Business Magazine

Description: A magazine dedicated to business and entrepreneurship, sharing the news of the day as well as interesting and informative insights for the industry.

Can you write for BC Business? Yes, eight times per year they open up their magazine for submissions for quality articles. There may be other opportunities as well.

BC History Magazine

Description: A magazine exploring British Columbia’s history, both to enlighten and entertain. You’ll find content ranges from hockey to geography and is released every quarter.

Description: Since 1959, BC Magazine (part of OP Media Group; check out their other publications as well) has released quarterly magazines with content focused on British Columbia’s natural wonders.

Description: BC Organic Grower was founded in 1998, and focuses on agricultural and recreational gardening content. It’s a warm-toned magazine that offers educational tips alongside heart-warming stories.

Edible Vancouver

Description: A delicious overview of the areas to eat and source food in Vancouver, and beyond! This magazine covers ground as far out as the Kootenays, making a few extra special mentions for vino. It will be no surprise that the full publication title is Edible Vancouver and Wine Country.

Description: As the name suggests, this magazines is all about exploring. Its target audience is active outdoor enthusiasts, and the content is mostly Canadian or from a Canadian perspective.

Folklife

Description: This magazine is meant to connect with slow living and creativity. It runs on “island time.” The magazine features artistic photographs and stories geared towards island living, including recipes for home remedies, reflections on life and culture, and more.

Can you write for Folklife? You bet. They want “honest, romantic, soulful, and perspective-shifting work that reveals life as an art form.”

Description: Founded in the 1990s, Geist is home to the weird and wonderful in words. It is a literary magazine for ideas and culture, and offers an array of content from puzzles to thought pieces.

Loose Lips Magazine

Description: Loose Lips Magazine is a delightfully woman-forward publication. It has covered local arts, culture, and women’s health issues in the Vancouver area since 2015. The magazine has a strong mandate towards fairness, equity, and honesty.

Can you write for Loose Lips Magazine? Yes! From their website, “We encourage pitches and contributions from experienced writers and journalists, especially people of colour, people of all abilities, and LGBTQIA+ folks.”

Description: Montecristo is a lifestyle magazine that showcases new fashions, destination vacations, cuisine, local charitable events, and more. It’s a what to do in Vancouver, with a dash of world issues that Vancouverites might be interested in.

Description: This is an organization for magazines in BC, so you’ll find an interesting hub of publishing-related jobs as well as opportunities to write for their various partner magazines.

Can you write for The Magazine Association of British Columbia? You can write for one of their magazines, yes, and if you get in with the organization itself, there is content writing work. Otherwise, there are some writing contests.

Description: An independent news magazine from Vancouver, The Tyee tackles lots of political, sensitive, and inciting topics thoroughly and are dogged in their pursuit of their stories. They have changed laws, started grassroots movements, and been good stewards of their community.
